Ryno was born on 23 July 1987 in Bloemfontein, where he attended school at Grey College Primary and matriculated at Sentraal High School in 2005. After matric he set his sights on a tertiary qualification at the University of the Free State (UFS), where he obtained a B. Comm (General Management) degree. After obtaining his degree he started working for a local plumbing contractor, as a manager, and it is then that he developed an interest in quantity surveying.

He then decided to enrol for an honours degree in quantity surveying at the UFS. After completing his honours degree in 2012, he was motivated to learn as much as he could about the building industry. He said: “if you do not understand and know how to construct a building, how will you ever be able to measure one”. He joined a developing company in 2013 to gain experience in the dynamics of the building industry. To broaden his knowledge, he enrolled in 2014 at the UFS for a masters in Land and Property Development to understand the whole building environment better.

In 2014 he joined a local contracting firm that focussed on general building and civil works. After two years in the general building environment and with a completed master’s degree, he got the opportunity to join an engineering consulting firm.

At the engineering firm he developed his consulting and surveying abilities further and was allowed membership of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), which is an international body that regulates and provides worldwide advice, services and support to quantity surveyors and firms in the civil construction industry.

The next logical step was the establishment of his company, Cetera Chartered Quantity Surveyors in 2018.

There could be no doubt, that under the guidance and management of Ryno Smith, Cetera Chartered Quantity Surveyors will deliver professional work of high quality.
